Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira: The Reason I Love MMA

As I sat watching the main event of UFC 102 between two of the legendary warriors of our beloved sport, I was reminded why I love this sport so much. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira embodies what us hardcore fans call the "beauty" of mixed martial arts. Here is a man that has overcome so much adversity in his life to become a truly captivating figure in a world full of inspiring people. Just when you think this man has reached the end of his amazing career he, yet again, proves all of his critics wrong with a vintage performance against Randy Couture.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira was run over by a truck when he was 11 and was in a coma for 4 days. In the hospital for 11 months, he eventually recovered and went on to become an MMA champion. It's almost cruel irony that you can look at his career and make comparisions to that tragic event in his life. Being run over by a truck, recovering and winning is the exact description that take the form of his memorable bouts inside the ring/cage.

It does Nogueira injustice if we simply say he has "heart", it is much more than that. Heart, guts, desire, sure he has all that in spades, but there is something different about Minotauro that cannot be explained. There is something deep down inside this man that will not allow him to quit, which in my opinion makes him one of the most unbelievable figures in all of sports.

I'll say this in closing, if you are a fan of MMA and not a fan of Nogueira, there is something seriously wrong with your appreciation of this sport. I understand that Portland is Randy Couture's hometown, but the people that booed Minotauro even after the fight was over, that's just mind-blowing to me if you have any knowledge about MMA. Anyways, no disrespect to Randy Couture, Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan, but to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, "That Man is My Hero"!

  2. Aside from being an amazing fighter, he just comes across as a genuinely nice person. Really reminds me of the late great Alexis Arguello.

  3. Plus he was stabbed in the back... which accounts for the massive scar on his back

  5. Just to speak for the people of Oregon, I was at UFC 102 and although the boos were most audible there were plenty of people, including myself, that gave Minotauro a begrudging round of applause. The guy is a badass.

  6. i'm not feeling it,couture gets my vote for hangin with the younger "legend"..Nog was aloof in pre fight PR and actual fight, hence booing..When Nog changes his attitude and is still top tier when he's 46,then he'll be a legend

  7. The previous comment is proof that it is impossible to please everyone. To doubt Nog's legendary status and imply he has an attitude problem in the same sentence is an impressive feat of ignorance about MMA. It is ok for you to like Randy better. No need to put his victorious opponents down because of it.

  8. i realy like culture, but that's no chance to compare him with nog. nog is a true legendary fighter, he may not be in his prime now, but we, who love mma, know what he did in his life as a fighter.

  9. Nog is no legend,he couldn't submit my grandad.
It's great that the doctor said he'd never walk again however doc's say that all the time,it's no reason to try call him a legend, his record is lame.
If he's a "legend" why couldn't he finish the man 13 years his senior?Cos that man,Randy Couture,is the true legend.46 years old and still escaping the "legends" submissions.
Nog was the first decent BIG bjj fighter, that's all.
