Blog: Skrape from TapouT
If you listened to this week's show, you'll know that another member of the MMA community has joined the MMA Scraps Radio family and he's a tall drink of water.
Sky Skrape from the world's most popular MMA brand has joined us as a regular contributing personality to the show. But how did all of this happen?
This story actually goes back before I ever started MMA Scraps Radio with Rich. Previously my current co-host Rob and I had another show called Scrapple Sandwich. It was a variety show that occasionally dipped into MMA, but was never it's primary focus. I was a fan of MMA and watched the TapouT show regularly. We were doing interviews with mainstream celebrities as well as MMA fighters so I figured I'd try to get the guys on. After some internet searching, I emailed in and scheduled an interview with all 3 members just prior to the Randy Vs Brock fight. What transpired was almost exactly what I had seen on TV.....mayhem. But it was fun. The one regret I had from that interview was not following up fast enough for the one on one interview I wanted to do with Mask. Only a couple of months later, he passed away.
Fast forward to February of this year when Pat was on tour with TapouT and we decided to do a show while he was on the bus. I figured this would be a great chance to add guests to the show since Pat was on the bus anyway. So we scheduled a show that included Punkass and Skrape and put on one of my more favorite shows so far. Surprisingly, when I got Skrape on the phone and reminded him that it was me from the Scrapplesandwich interview, he totally remembered. I was legitimately surprised that he would remember such a crazy interview, but he went on to tell me that it was one of the most funny interviews they had ever done.
What surprised me about this episode was how interesting Skrape was when talking about MMA and how much he added to the show. Honestly, I thought he would be that same wild and crazy guy from the Scrapple Sandwich interview, but I was very pleasantly surprised to hear his views on what was going on in MMA at that time. Not only that, once his segment was over, he did something that no one else had done up until that point...he stayed on hold to listen to the rest of the show. This really blew me away as most people just hang up. Some fighters will hang on just long enough to hear what we say immediately after they get off the phone, but most just get off the phone as soon as they say good bye. I kept bringing Skrape back into the fold during the show and he continued to impress me by his knowledge and overall demeanor. I was hoping to bring him back on the show, but unfortunately forgot to write his number down before we went off the air.
At that point I wasn't sure if/when I'd have Skrape back on. I wanted to, but didn't want to make a huge deal about it. Then a couple of weeks ago I was thinking about who I would like to have on the Anniversary show and Skrape jumped into my head. Ironically later that day he sent me a DM on Twitter (without me saying anything) saying that he wanted to call in every week to talk MMA. What really surprised me about this is that I never mentioned to him that I'd like to have him call in. To me, this was a sign that I must be doing things right because Skrape could have choose ANY MMA show out there (and there are tons) but choose mine and I couldn't be happier.
Now I won't lie, I have no idea exactly what we are going to do every week, but I really feel like Skrape can add a ton to the show. This is a guy who was around MMA when it was illegal in more places than it was legal and has seen everything. Just having him call in from time to time would be immensely valuable to the content that I provide our listeners.
I want to be clear and state that TapouT does not sponsor or endorse the show specifically. Skrape is just calling in as a personality of the sport to tell us his views on what's going on. I am just really looking forward to seeing where this goes and very excited to continue to grow this already huge show.

Blog: Fighters are fans too
In the time I've been doing MMA interviews (which is actually a little big longer than I've been doing MMA Scraps Radio) I have noticed one really cool thing about this sport and it's athletes. Some of the fighters are fans too.
What exactly do I mean? I mean they get giddy just like other fans when talking to their favorite fighters.
I think the first time I really experienced this (altho I could be wrong, it just sticks out) is when we had Frank Mir on the first time. Pat was still co-hosting on the regular with me and when I told him I got a hold of Frank, he sounded like a kid who just opened a Christmas gift. When Frank was on the air with us, you could really tell that Pat was tickled. I have to say that it never occurred to me that fighters could really be fans of other fighters. It happened again after Ben Saunders joined us and didn't realize that my co-host was Pat Barry. It wasn't until after the show that he later texted me asking me why I didn't tell him that was Pat. He was really excited but disappointed that he didn't get to talk to Pat one on one.
Of course everyone knows about Pat and Cro Cop. I can tell you that having had actual off air personal conversations with Pat that he isn't kidding when he says he was a huge fan. It wasn't for show. And yes, he really wanted his autograph.
This is just one of the cool things that I have come across since doing this show. It's happened more times than what I have just mentioned, but those are a couple of times that really stood out.
This show has shown me a side of the sport I would have never have seen otherwise. I will attempt to keep sharing bits with each of you.

My experiences in the world of MMA
This blog is something I've been considering writing for some time. The honest truth is that I can't reveal everything I know or have experienced or even what I think until after I leave the sport. I found out really early that saying the wrong thing can really put you on the outs in MMA.
I guess in some ways this is a way for me to vent about certain aspects of the sport without burning bridges.
Let me attempt to blow your mind a bit. Even if you are an avid listener of the show (and if you are, thank you so much) and even if you have heard EVERY SINGLE show I have done, there is no way you could ever tell anyone what my honest opinion of fighters, the sport, or the industry at large is. Why? Because I've never said anything publicly about it.
We have to walk a very fine line when doing the show and I am very wary of saying things that might upset certain people. The proof is in the pudding tho, we have always been a fairly large sized show and we continue to grow. Some shows out there that don't censor themselves or don't hold themselves to a certain standard, don't have the listeners we do. Ironically, in some ways I am envious of those shows/people. I have worked hard to have a successful show and will not jeopardize that by airing my dirty laundry, but I sometimes wish I could just blast the people that deserve to be blasted and tell the truth about people who hide behind cute nick names and false fronts.
If you have ever met me in person, you probably know that I'm fairly brash, cuss quite often and will pull no punches when it comes to my opinion. This is exactly 180 degrees from my on air persona. I realized a long time ago that I could either be myself 100% or have a really successful show. I figured if no one was listening, who the hell cares what I had to say. I choose success.
Having said all of that, I've never compromised my morals, thoughts or ideas for the show. I draw the line there. While I may not be my usual ridiculous self on air, I am not undercutting my own beliefs. Perhaps one day I will blog about the things I've seen and experienced while being in this crazy and wonderful sport, but it won't be any time soon.
I think I'll use this as a place to vent and talk about the things I'm doing during the week. Maybe people will actually read it!

I'll explain why I don't tell who my guests are in a future blog. There is a good reason for that one too.
